US Wind Announces Major Offshore Wind Progress

Steel production is back in the Region with a focus on renewable energy: Baltimore-based USWind has announced plans to invest $77M for port upgrades to assemble turbine components and start a new company, “Sparrows Point Steel,” on 90 waterfront acres at Tradepoint Atlantic (TPA). The new manufacturing hub will make the foundations that anchor wind turbines to the ocean floor supporting US Wind’s projects and, longer-term, the wind energy market across the U.S. The Sparrows Point Steel factory could employ 500 workers at full capacity, and US Wind’s existing offshore project in Ocean City, MD is expected to generate 1,300 construction jobs, with another 3,500 jobs estimated for a proposed second phase.
