University of Maryland Climbs to Highest R&D Ranking, Joining Top-Ranked JHU

University of Maryland now ranks 14th among all universities (8th among public universities) on the NSF's annual survey of research expenditures, with almost $1.1 billion in R&D investment. It's the result of a decade-long process to combine research efforts at UMD's Baltimore and College Park campuses. UMD has now joined perennial #1 R&D leader Johns Hopkins University among the top 20 in the NSF’s Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) ranking; total investment of over $4 billion between these two institutions is more than all Boston-area schools combined.
