UMBC STEM BUILD Students Conduct and Present Viral Research in Re-imagined Summer Program
UMBC set out to offer 19 members of their STEM BUILD Cohort 5 program an authentic research experience this summer; but how to do that during a pandemic? Now, after completing the eight-week program virtually, UMBC reports that the use of EdTech converted their in-person program into a successful online learning experience unlike anything they’d tried before. Using the VoiceThread platform to analyze the genomes of viruses that infect bacterial cells, students learned about a new area of life science, conducted virtual independent research in groups, improved their presentation skills and more. E-learning has become a critical component for schools, colleges, and universities across the nation.
