Smiths Detection has received a $379M contract from the U.S Department of of Homeland Security to provide its "HCVT" advanced scanner to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) division. Smiths Detection is part of the British engineering firm Smiths Group, and nearly 300 people work at the company's U.S. headquarters in Harford County. According to the @bbj, the HCVT tech is able to penetrate the steel sides of train cars and signal the detection of items such as explosives, narcotics or weapons.
