Friday Facts: Baltimore's Streetlamps
Time for this week's edition of FRIDAY FACTS:
Baltimore was the first US city to have gas streetlamps
In 1816, the artist Rembrandt Peale - known for his paintings of Washington, Jefferson, and others - created a gas lamp inside his art gallery on Holliday Street in downtown Baltimore. Within days, the city was intrigued, and the mayor signed an ordinance allowing for gas lamps to light the streets.
Peale's "Gas Light Company of Baltimore", now known as BGE, became the first public utility company in the United States. Still today, Greater Baltimore is a leader in developing new and innovative energy technologies, from wind power to biofuels. Learn more: http://ow.ly/EQzb50DXIjB
