“O! say can you see,...” Known as Baltimore's oldest holiday, Defenders' Day commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore on Sept. 13-14, 1814, and the writing of the nation's national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." The holiday has been celebrated continuously each year since the British ships sailed away in 1814, and events at the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore City will be celebrated this year on Sept. 17 and 18. The valiant defense of the Fort continues to inspire the Region with this year’s theme: “A Tribute to Baltimore: Community. Service. Sacrifice.” Events include music, living history, U.S. Army, and, new this year, evening luminaries lighting up the Fort and grounds for a rare nighttime event! Information and event schedule: Greater Baltimore - home to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Fort George G. Meade, Md, the United States Naval Academy, and Coast Guard Yard - has a proud history of innovation in defense technology.
