Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore to Formally Merge With Greater Baltimore Committee, National Search for New CEO Launched

The newly merged GBC will step forward with new leadership and a new vision for the region’s future.

Baltimore, MD – As the Greater Baltimore Committee (GBC) and the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore (EAGB) prepare to formally merge on May 25th at the GBC Annual Meeting, area leaders have launched a national search for the newly merged entity’s next president and chief executive officer (CEO).

“This is an important milestone and concrete step forward in the work we started last year in creating and driving a new, bold vision for how the Greater Baltimore region can compete on national and global stages,” said Calvin G. Butler, Jr., Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Exelon Corporation, and Chair of GBC’s Board of Directors.

The Search Committee is being led by Mary Ann Scully, former Vice Chair of GBC’s Board of Directors and incoming Dean of the Joseph A. Sellinger School of Business and Management at Loyola University Maryland. She convened a diverse group of representatives for the search from across varied industries and sectors in the Baltimore region, ensuring broad and varied perspectives will help identify and select the best candidate to lead the refreshed vision of GBC:

• Anthony L. Jenkins, Ph.D., President, Coppin State University

• August J. Chiasera, President, Greater Baltimore/Chesapeake Region, M&T Bank

• Brian D. Pieninck, President & CEO, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield

• Calvin G. Butler, Jr., Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Exelon Corporation

• Christy Wyksiel, Senior Advisor to the President, Hopkins University

• Fagan Harris, CEO, Baltimore Corps

• Greg Fitchitt, The Howard Hughes Corporation

• Laura Gamble, Regional President Greater Maryland, PNC

• Kim Schatzel, Ph.D., President, Towson University

• Ricky Smith, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Aviation Administration

• Shanaysha Sauls, Ph.D., President & CEO, Baltimore Community Foundation

• William Moore, President, Southway Builders

• William Stromberg, Board Chair and Retired CEO, T. Rowe Price

“The newly merged GBC’s first CEO will set the tone and play a significant role in helping us retain, acquire and develop talent, forge partnerships and lead collaborative discussions to crystallize GBC’s newly articulated mission and vision for a Greater Baltimore region successfully focused on inclusive economic growth,” said Scully.

The Search Committee has selected Korn Ferry to lead the national CEO search. Korn Ferry is the largest global leadership and talent consulting firm, with deep experience placing diverse CEOs for the top metropolitan chambers of commerce and economic growth organizations in the U.S.

“They produced impeccable references and demonstrated a strong track record of success in recruiting top talent across a diverse spectrum,” said Scully. “Korn Ferry brings deep relevant knowledge, expertise, and relationships across the country to support GBC in identifying the best leader for the future who can partner with businesses to drive impactful change across the region. It has a world-class group of internal specialists and a vast network of contacts across many industries. Korn Ferry will help us reach and identify executives with new perspectives, experiences, and ideas to bring forward the change we want, and the collaboration and engagement we need.”

The search process has begun, and the GBC Board hopes to announce a new president and CEO in September.

Baltimore Community Foundation President and CEO and GBC Search Committee member Dr. Shanaysha Sauls said the Search Committee is excited for the launch of the national search. “The Search Committee’s approach reflects a commitment to think differently about the type of leadership our region needs to thrive,” said Sauls. “GBC’s next leader must possess that tangible combination of energy, experience and credibility to champion and engage both the Baltimore region’s enviable economic assets and its broad, diverse communities.”

“The conversation about our region’s shared future is changing and broadening,” said Sauls. “This search is an important next step to collectively envision and shape where the region needs to go, who participates in its success, and how we can get there.”
