Amtrak, Maryland to Partner on Replacement of B&P Tunnel at a Total Cost of $4B

Amtrak and the State of Maryland are partnering to replace the 150-year-old B&P Tunnel at a total cost of $4B. The important project will triple rail capacity and improve train speed, while also providing for future expansion possibilities. During a recent ceremony commemorating the 150th anniversary of the tunnel’s original groundbreaking, Amtrak announced that it will honor Frederick Douglass by naming the replacement tunnel after him. The new tunnel is expected to create 30,000 jobs for the region, including 20,000 during construction, and will improve commuting times to DC and points north. Amtrak is currently performing final design and preparing for construction. Via Baltimore Business Journal.
